Start of compulsory insurance
In principle, every person resident in Switzerland must take out health insurance or have it taken out by their legal representative within three months of taking up residence or giving birth in Switzerland.
All members of a family, adults and children, are insured individually. If you join in good time, insurance cover begins from the date of birth or taking up residence in Switzerland. The health insurance company will therefore reimburse any costs retroactively up to the start of insurance cover. Due to this retroactive reimbursement, insured persons must pay the premiums retroactively up to the start of insurance cover.
In the event of late registration, insurance cover only begins from the date of enrolment. If the delay is not excusable, the insured person must pay a premium surcharge.
End of the insurance obligation
Insurance cover ends when the insured person is no longer required to take out insurance:
upon death
on transfer of residence from Switzerland to another country, unless the person must continue to be insured in Switzerland under the bilateral agreements with the EU and EFTA or other international social security agreements.
